Use Appearance in your strategy to control how its offer looks. These instructions apply when your strategy shows the Appearance card and Customize appearance action. If those controls are unavailable, contact Support with the strategy and placement you want to style.
Shopify's checkout editor controls checkout fonts and colors. Changing a strategy's layout does not change those store-wide styles or install an app block.
Open Upsell Strategies in Order Editing.
Open the strategy you want to change.
Select Customize appearance on its Appearance card.
Choose the placement you want to customize when the strategy uses more than one.
Adjust the settings beside the preview.
Compare the offer on its own with Full checkout or Full page.
Check the mobile and desktop previews.
Select Save strategy when you are ready to save the existing strategy.
For a strategy you have not created yet, Save keeps the appearance in the strategy draft. Finish the strategy's creation flow to save it. If the editor returns you to the strategy page to complete another required field, finish that field and save there.
The editor only offers controls supported by the selected placement.
Placement | What to review |
|---|---|
Product list or carousel | Product layout, visible products, navigation, images, borders, offer message styling, prices, savings and ratings. |
Free shipping | Threshold and product layout, progress styling, images and the supported product controls. |
Checkbox | Compact or Detailed layout, card frame, message styling and sale-price color. Detailed layout includes an image. |
Featured product | The single-product layout and supported image, border, price and rating settings. |
Changing the number of visible products changes the layout. It does not make an unavailable product eligible for an offer.
Offer message shows the strategy's wording for context. Edit the wording in the strategy's Message step; a product module can keep its own override. For fonts and colors, open the information control beside Appearance and select Edit fonts and colors.
One-Click Upsell has its own page customizer, opened from its Appearance card. Use the One-Click page guide for its sections and accept or decline pages.
A placement that has not been customized starts from its compatible existing app styling when you select Customize or Customize appearance. Review it before saving, especially if you previously changed appearance inside Shopify's app-block settings. Those block-specific overrides cannot all be copied into this editor.
Opening and closing the workspace without editing does not save a new look. Changing only a strategy's targeting also leaves its existing appearance in place.
Once you save a placement's own appearance, later global offer-branding changes do not restyle it. All app blocks using that strategy's placement share its saved appearance. Shopify's checkout fonts and colors still apply.
Save as default makes the current placement's look a starting point for new strategies. It does not restyle existing strategies.
Reset to default applies the saved default, or the built-in starting look if there is no saved default, to the placement you are editing. Review and save that change before expecting it on the customer-facing offer.
Save strategy saves the whole strategy, including strategy-page edits that were already pending when you opened Appearance. Review those changes too.
Discard restores the workspace to when you opened it or last saved there. It preserves strategy-page edits that were already pending when you opened the workspace.
If the saved strategy reports incomplete publication, reopen it and use Retry publication before checking the live result.
After a split test launches, its appearance is locked, including when the test is paused. Cancel the test before changing how the tested offer looks, then create a new test for the revised comparison. A read-only appearance workspace can also mean customization is temporarily unavailable for your store; ask Support if there is no test explaining the restriction.
Reopen the strategy and confirm the saved settings remain. Check the installed block in Shopify's editor, then use a qualifying cart and continue to checkout for a checkout offer. You do not need to place an order to check its appearance.
The preview uses sample content where needed. It does not prove customer targeting, inventory eligibility, payment or an order change.
