Decide which default product or variant detail you need to replace.
Create or identify a compatible Shopify metafield definition and add values to the products or variants that will be offered.
The metafield must be accessible to the app and available for the relevant Shopify resources.
Data Sources change displayed product details. They do not change the underlying product title, price, inventory, or variant in Shopify.
Test each configured surface because extensions can have different space and content constraints.
Data Sources let an upsell use a product or variant metafield instead of a default catalogue detail. You can use them to display campaign-specific titles, descriptions, review text, shipping messages, product attributes, or button wording without replacing the source product data.
The configuration applies when a supported Order Editing upsell reads that detail. If a configured metafield is empty or unavailable for a product, the affected content can be blank or use the supported default behaviour. Test products with and without values before launch.
In the Shopify admin, go to Apps > Order Editing.
Select Upsell Strategies.
Open the action or configuration menu.
Select Data sources.
The page title is Data sources and explains that you can replace default product details with product or variant metafields.
On Data sources, select Add Data Source.
Choose the type of detail you want to replace.
Choose whether the source belongs to a product or variant when the type supports that distinction.
Select an existing compatible metafield definition.
If no suitable definition exists, use the Shopify action to create a product or variant metafield, then return and refresh the picker.
Add optional prefix or suffix text when the displayed value needs context.
Choose the text appearance.
Review the preview or example.
Use the save bar to save the changes.
Each data-source type can be configured once. Edit the existing source instead of adding a duplicate type.
Inventory and out-of-stock handling are managed through the product and inventory settings, not by creating a Data Source.
Available types can include product-level and variant-level content such as:
custom product or variant titles;
custom product or variant images;
descriptions and supporting product information;
review or rating content;
shipping date or delivery information;
final-sale messaging;
care, warranty, sustainability, benefits, ingredients, technical specifications, or compatibility details;
price-comparison information;
variant visibility, swatches, images, and titles;
action-button copy.
The exact catalogue depends on the types supported by the current app version. Choose the narrowest type that represents the merchant-facing information you want to replace.
Setting | What it controls | Default |
|---|---|---|
Metafield | The Shopify product or variant value used by the selected source type | Required |
Prefix | Text placed before the metafield value | Blank |
Suffix | Text placed after the metafield value | Blank |
Text appearance | The visual tone used for supported text content | Default |
Text appearances can include Default, Subdued, Info, Success, Warning, and Critical. Use warning and critical appearances only for information that genuinely requires customer attention.
Keep prefixes and suffixes short. For example, a delivery-date value may need a label such as “Ships by”, while a self-explanatory custom title should not repeat another heading.
Open the relevant product or variant in Shopify.
Find the selected metafield.
Enter a value in the format required by its definition.
Repeat for all products or variants likely to appear in the offer.
Save the Shopify resource.
Return to Order Editing and refresh the preview or customer test.
Use consistent units, capitalization, punctuation, and meaning across the catalogue. A Data Source displays the stored value but cannot correct inconsistent merchant data.
Images must resolve to supported Shopify media. References or complex metafield values must match the data-source type expected by the app.
Order Editing validates saved sources against the current metafield definitions. A source can become invalid if its definition is deleted, its owner type changes, access is removed, or the value type is no longer supported.
When the page reports invalid sources:
Review the warning and identify each affected type.
Confirm the metafield still exists in Shopify.
Replace it with a compatible accessible definition, or remove the source.
Save the corrected configuration.
Retest the affected product and placement.
Invalid sources may be removed from the configuration to prevent an unsupported mapping from remaining active.
Choose a test product with a known metafield value.
Confirm the product is eligible for a draft or controlled upsell strategy.
Open a supported preview or customer placement.
Confirm the custom value replaces the intended default detail.
Confirm prefix, suffix, and appearance are correct.
Test a variant with a different value when the source is variant-level.
Test a product with no value and confirm the result is acceptable.
Repeat on every important upsell surface.
Confirm it belongs to the correct product or variant resource, uses a compatible definition type, and is accessible to the app. Refresh the picker after creating or changing the definition.
No. Edit or replace the existing source for that type.
No. They change the detail used by supported Order Editing upsell displays. The original product and variant data remain unchanged.
Check that the offered product or variant has a saved value, the correct source type is configured, and the definition is still valid. Then retest the exact variant shown to the customer.
No. Configure unavailable and out-of-stock product behaviour in the applicable product and inventory settings.
