Shopify Plus is required to add checkout app blocks.
Confirm the store has a clear free-shipping threshold for each market and currency you will use.
Confirm the products are active and available in the required markets.
Decide whether the strategy should use global free-shipping tiers or a supported strategy override.
The Free Shipping Upsell shows how far a cart is from free shipping and recommends products that can close the gap. After the threshold is reached, the placement can show its configured normal offer behaviour.
Open Upsell Strategies.
Select Create Strategy > Create from scratch.
On Placements, choose Free Shipping Upsell for the Checkout.
Confirm Placement, select Markets, enter an Upsell Strategy Name, and select Draft while you install and test the placement.
Under Customer Segment, keep All customers or add targeting filters.
Complete SHIPPING with the intended free-shipping tiers.
Complete FILTER to control which products can be recommended.
Add or review the product module used for recommendations.
Configure supported offer, quantity, and advanced options.
Select Publish to save the strategy as Draft.
Global tiers are managed under App Settings > Global settings > Shipping Recalculation > Global free shipping tiers. Each tier has a destination, name, currency, minimum cart value, and optional subscription behaviour.
Strategies use global tiers by default unless they have a supported override. If Shopify delivery profiles contain the source thresholds, you can import detected tiers and review them before saving.
The amount, destination, and currency must agree. Check each market in checkout after changing delivery profiles, currencies, or subscription thresholds.
Use Smart Recommendation for automatic available-bestseller recommendations that help close the gap. Use another module shown by the editor when you need a controlled product or product pool.
The product filter should avoid products that cannot reasonably be purchased in the current market or that exceed the intended offer design. Hidden-product, inventory, restriction, and market rules still apply after the module returns candidates.
If no eligible products remain, the progress message can still be affected by the placement configuration, but the strategy cannot display a product recommendation that the customer cannot buy.
Select Open checkout editor from the placement setup.
Confirm you are editing the published Checkout page.
In the Delivery section, select Add app block.
Search for Order Editing.
Add Free Shipping Upsell.
Review the block's checkout-editor settings and placement.
Select Save.
Return to Order Editing and confirm the Free Shipping surface is Active.
Create a test cart below the threshold in a selected market.
Confirm the block shows the correct currency, amount remaining, and recommendations.
Add a recommended product and confirm the progress updates.
Cross the threshold and confirm the qualified state.
Confirm Shopify shows the expected free delivery option when the cart qualifies.
Remove or change an item so the cart moves below the threshold again.
Repeat for subscription carts if subscription tiers are enabled.
Repeat in every important market and currency.
Set the reviewed strategy to Active and monitor impressions, paid upsells, and revenue.
You do not need to complete the order. The cart and checkout show the threshold, recommendations, qualified state, and Shopify delivery options before payment.
Confirm Shopify Plus, the saved Free Shipping Upsell app block, strategy status, Checkout placement, market, and targeting.
Check whether the strategy uses global tiers or an override. Then review destination, currency, minimum cart value, subscription behaviour, and any recent delivery-profile change.
Check the module configuration and product filter. Then check market availability, inventory, hidden products, restrictions, and whether the products can be purchased in checkout.
The customer is in the qualified state, so a “remaining amount” prompt is no longer needed. Review the placement's configured behaviour after qualification.
The progress tier and Shopify's actual delivery rate must agree. Confirm Shopify or the carrier app returns a free rate for that cart and destination. The upsell progress bar does not create a missing carrier rate by itself.
