Open Upsell Strategies, select Create Strategy > Create from scratch, then use Placements.
Before choosing, confirm your Shopify plan, staff checkout permission, target market, product availability, and the point in the customer journey where the offer is useful. A placement is not customer-ready until its required Shopify extension is installed and saved.
Page | Placement | What customers see |
|---|---|---|
Checkout | Product List Upsell | A compact list of add-ons before payment |
Checkout | Free Shipping Upsell | Progress to a shipping threshold with product suggestions |
Post-purchase | One-Click Upsell | A full-page offer after payment and before the Thank You Page |
Thank You Page | Product Carousel | Swipeable recommendations inside the main Order Editing block |
Thank You Page | Product List Upsell | A standalone recommendation list |
Order Status Page | Product Carousel | Recommendations inside the main Order Editing block |
Order Status Page | Featured Product Upsell | One focused standalone product offer |
Each catalogue card shows Active only when its required Shopify extension is installed. Otherwise, it shows Not installed. Some additional placements appear only when their feature is available for the store.
Checkout placements appear before the customer completes payment.
Use this for a short list of low-friction add-ons. Customers can add a product without leaving checkout.
The setup page identifies this as the Product List Upsell Extension. In Shopify's editor, add the Product List Upsell block. You can optionally add Remove Product Upsells inside the Order Summary so customers can remove an accepted checkout upsell.
This placement uses a checkout app block and requires Shopify Plus.
Use this when a minimum cart value qualifies for free shipping. The block shows the gap and can recommend products that help close it.
The setup page identifies this as the Checkout Free Shipping Extension. In the Delivery section of Shopify's editor, add Upgrade to Free Shipping. This placement also requires Shopify Plus.
This full-page offer appears after payment and before the Thank You page. The customer can accept without entering payment details again.
Only one app can own Shopify's post-purchase page. Under Shopify checkout settings, select Order Editing as the post-purchase app and save.
This placement requires Shopify Plus or a partner development store.
Shopify decides whether the post-purchase page is eligible for an order. Use this placement for one strong offer rather than a broad catalogue.
The Thank You page appears immediately after the completed checkout.
The carousel sits inside the main Order Editing block provided by the Thank You Page Extension. Use it when customers should browse several products while reviewing or editing the new order.
The standalone Product List Upsell block provided by the Product List Upsell Extension shows recommendations outside the main editing block. Use it when you want a dedicated, scannable offer area.
The two placements are separate. Installing the main Order Editing block does not install the standalone Product List Upsell block.
Customers can revisit the Order Status page from order communication or their customer account while tracking the order.
The carousel appears inside the main Order Editing block provided by the Order Status Page Extension. It can remain available while the order is eligible for editing and the strategy has products to show.
The standalone Featured Product Upsell block provided by the Featured Product Upsell Extension highlights one focused recommendation outside the main editing block. It is useful for a warranty, accessory, replenishment item, or other offer that can be explained with one clear message.
Switch from Placements to Templates when you want a module preselected. Current template categories include AI recommendations, product add-ons, subscription upsells, and recently viewed products.
The template still creates a normal strategy. Review the placement, market, targeting, product source, and offer settings before publishing.
Choose based on when the offer is useful:
Use Checkout for additions that should be considered before payment.
Use One-Click Upsell for one immediate, high-impact offer after payment.
Use the Thank You page for post-payment discovery while the purchase is fresh.
Use the Order Status page for repeat exposure when customers return to track or edit the order.
You can use more than one placement, but each needs its own installed extension and a clear role in the journey. Avoid repeating the same aggressive message everywhere.
Save the strategy with the intended placement and market.
Install the matching app block or post-purchase app.
Use Preview in Order Editing to review the offer content and design.
For Checkout, add a product to the cart and continue to checkout without placing an order.
For Thank You or Order Status, open the relevant page in Shopify's checkout editor.
For One-Click Upsell, use the Order Editing placement preview.
Confirm the offer appears in the exact placement and block you selected.
These preview routes confirm content, installation, and layout. Use an optional end-to-end order only when you need to prove payment or a real Shopify order update.
Use the dedicated setup guide for each page because the Shopify installation steps are different.
