Editing Restrictions prevent customers from editing selected orders or line items. Use them when a sales channel, fulfilment location, product, variant, free item, or delivery method needs stricter handling than the rest of your store.
Open App Settings > Global settings > Editing Restrictions.
Restrictions work alongside your editing window, fulfilment conditions, and Editing Rules and Automations. A restriction can narrow what is available; it does not extend an expired editing window or make an otherwise ineligible order editable.
Select Add restriction.
Choose a restriction type.
Select or enter the values to block.
For a Variant Title restriction, choose whether the title must match exactly.
Select Add restriction.
Find the new row in the restrictions table and review its value and coverage.
You can add several values of the same type. If any order-level restriction matches, the customer cannot edit the order. Product- and variant-level restrictions affect matching items or options while other eligible items can remain editable.
Type | Scope | What it does | What you enter |
|---|---|---|---|
Sales Channel | Entire order | Blocks orders placed through a selected sales channel. | One or more sales channels, such as TikTok Shop or Shopify POS. |
Fulfillment Location | Entire order | Blocks orders assigned to a selected Shopify location. | One or more fulfilment locations. |
Order Tag | Entire order | Blocks an order with any matching tag. | Exact Shopify order tags. |
Product Tag | Line item | Locks line items whose product has a matching tag. | Exact Shopify product tags. |
Product Attribute | Line item | Locks line items with a matching line-item attribute. | Attribute names such as |
Option Name | Product option | Hides an option type during product switching. | Option names such as |
Option Value | Option value | Hides a specific option value during product switching. | Values such as |
Variant Title | Variant | Hides variants whose titles match a term. | One or more terms of the minimum length shown in the form. |
Product SKU | Line item | Locks products with a matching SKU. | Exact product SKUs. |
Disable Free Item Editing | Line item | Prevents customers from editing or removing items discounted to zero. | No value; add the restriction once. |
Hidden Products Query | Product discovery | Hides matching products from upsells and product selectors. | A Shopify product search query. |
Delivery Method Keyword | Entire order | Blocks a shipping-method title containing the keyword. | Case-insensitive keywords of at least three characters. |
Shipping Method (Exact) | Entire order | Blocks an exact shipping-method title. | A detected method or a custom exact title. |
Variant Title uses partial matching by default. For example, Limited Edition can match Limited Edition - Blue. Turn on Use exact match instead of partial match when only the complete title should match.
The exact-match option applies to the configured variant-title restrictions together. Test every existing title restriction before changing it.
Use Shipping Method (Exact) when one known rate title must be blocked. Use Delivery Method Keyword when several titles share a reliable phrase, such as Pickup. Keyword matching is case-insensitive and requires at least three characters.
Rate titles can be changed by Shopify, a carrier, or another app. Retest these restrictions after changing shipping rates.
Disable Free Item Editing protects the zero-priced line item itself. It does not recalculate whether the remaining order still qualifies for a gift-with-purchase promotion. If the entire order must be protected, use an Order Tag restriction or an editing rule that matches that promotion.
Hidden Products Query affects product discovery rather than an item already in the order. It removes matching products from Order Editing upsells and selectors. Use Shopify's product-query syntax and test the query with products that should be included and excluded.
The Quick templates section provides one-click starting points for common restrictions. Current templates include examples for Final Sale, Preorder, Insurance, Digital, Bundle, and Subscription product tags; Return Order and fraud order tags; TikTok Shop and Shopify POS sales channels; and the Color option name.
Select Add restriction on a template, then review the row it creates. Templates use the displayed value exactly, so confirm that it matches the tag, channel, or option used by your store.
Use the table to search by value, filter by type, and sort by type or value. Select a row's view action to inspect its stored value and match type.
To remove one restriction, use its delete action. To remove several, select their rows and choose Delete. Removal takes effect for later eligibility checks, so retest any active customer journey that depended on it.
Use Export to copy the current restrictions as JSON. Export is unavailable when there are no configured restrictions.
To apply exported restrictions elsewhere:
On the source store, select Export, then Copy to clipboard.
On the destination store, open Editing Restrictions and select Import.
Paste the JSON and select Validate.
Review the restriction counts.
Select Import.
Imported restrictions are merged with the destination store and duplicates are ignored. A Hidden Products Query in the import can replace the existing query. Sales channels and locations can be stored as Shopify identifiers that do not resolve on another store, so review those entries after importing.
Use at least two existing controlled orders: one that should match and one that should not.
Create the required tag, product data, shipping method, location assignment, or channel condition.
Choose an existing eligible order that matches it. If the restriction depends on creation-time data such as sales channel and no existing order represents it, create one controlled order.
Open the customer's Order Status Page during the editing window.
Confirm an order-level restriction blocks the whole editing experience, or a product-level restriction blocks only the intended item or option.
Confirm an unrestricted item or order remains editable.
Repeat the test for partial versus exact variant titles and keyword versus exact delivery methods if you use them.
Check the stored value in the restrictions table against the data on the Shopify order or product. For tags, SKUs, attributes, option values, and exact shipping methods, copy the source value instead of retyping it. Also confirm the order was created or updated with that data before reopening the customer page.
Look for broad Order Tag, Sales Channel, Fulfillment Location, or Delivery Method Keyword restrictions first. Review active editing rules as well, because a rule can independently block editing.
Confirm the Shopify query matches the product and that the customer view has been refreshed. If you need to hide only selected variants, use a Variant Title, Product SKU, Option Name, or Option Value restriction instead of a product-level query.
Those values may refer to Shopify identifiers from the source store. Remove the unresolved rows and add the destination store's channel or location through Add restriction.
