Use Payment Method Switching to let a customer replace an order with a new Shopify checkout using another available payment method. This is a replacement-order flow: after the new checkout succeeds, the original order is cancelled and refunded, and the customer receives a new order number.
The option appears only while the original order's payment remains uncaptured and the order is still eligible for editing.
Your store must use a payment-capture setup that leaves the relevant payment uncaptured long enough for the customer to switch.
Confirm the editing window does not close before the customer can finish the replacement checkout.
Test how your warehouse and integrations handle the cancelled original order and new replacement order.
Review customer cancellation notifications, restocking, and order holds used if the replacement cannot be finalized safely.
In Order Editing, open App Settings.
Select Editing blocks.
Open Switch Payment Methods.
Turn on Allow customers to switch payment methods.
Save the changes.
The page warns that captured payments cannot use this flow. If the store captures every payment immediately at checkout, enabling the setting does not make the option appear for those orders.
The customer opens an eligible order and selects the payment-method switch action.
Order Editing explains that they have five minutes to complete the new checkout.
The customer selects Continue to checkout.
Shopify shows the payment methods available for that new checkout.
The customer submits the new payment details.
Shopify creates a replacement order with a new order number.
Order Editing cancels the original order and refunds it to the original payment method.
The customer receives the new order number by email according to the configured notifications.
The customer does not simply reassign the transaction on the original order. Your team will see a cancelled parent order and a new child order linked by Order Editing data.
If the replacement checkout expires before successful payment, Order Editing keeps the original order instead of cancelling it.
If the original order has already been captured, the switch action is unavailable.
If Order Editing determines that cancelling the original order risks a duplicate shipment, it can block the cancellation, hold the related orders, and mark them for staff review.
Refund settlement timing after a successful replacement is controlled by Shopify, the original payment gateway, and the customer's payment provider.
Do not tell customers they can switch to every payment method enabled on the store. Shopify decides which methods are offered for the replacement checkout based on the checkout, market, currency, customer, and payment configuration.
Use the translation action on Payment Method Switching to customize the section, action, unavailable message, redirect notice, modal title, checkout buttons, disclosure, and loading messages.
Keep these facts in the disclosure for every language:
the customer has five minutes;
they must complete a new checkout;
the original order is refunded after the new payment succeeds;
the completed switch creates a new order number.
Open an existing controlled order whose payment remains uncaptured. If none exists, create one low-value order and reuse it for this test.
Open the order during the editing window and confirm the switch action appears.
Start the flow and confirm the five-minute disclosure and Continue to checkout action.
Complete the new checkout with another available method.
Confirm Shopify created a new order and cancelled the original.
Confirm the original payment refund, inventory, fulfilment holds, tags, and parent-child order links.
Confirm the customer receives the expected notifications.
Repeat without completing the replacement checkout and confirm the original order is not cancelled.
Confirm Allow customers to switch payment methods is enabled.
Confirm the original payment is still uncaptured.
Confirm the order remains inside the editing window and is not blocked by another eligibility rule.
Check that Shopify can offer at least one valid method in the replacement checkout.
If the replacement was paid but both orders need review, check order holds, tags, and the timeline before releasing either order to fulfilment.
