Automatic order holds stop fulfilment from progressing while a customer can still edit an order. Order Editing places its own Shopify fulfilment-order hold during the editing window and removes that hold when editing closes.
Open App Settings > Global settings > Order Holds.
Use automatic holds when your warehouse, fulfilment provider, or connected integration should receive only the final order. The page shows Required by your integrations when a connected integration depends on this setting.
Open Order Holds.
Under Automatic order holds, turn on Enable automatic holds.
Save the change if the save bar appears.
Create one low-value controlled order after enabling the setting.
In Shopify admin, open its fulfilment order and confirm an Order Editing hold is present while editing remains open.
Let the editing window end, or finish the supported release flow, and confirm Order Editing removes its hold.
Enabling the setting also configures the Order Lifecycle to treat No Order Holds as a fulfilment condition. A newly created order is required for this check because enabling automatic holds does not retroactively add the missing hold to an order already in progress.
Holds can stack. If another app or a staff member creates a separate hold, Order Editing does not remove it when the editing window ends. It removes only the hold it owns.
This means an order can remain on hold after Order Editing releases it. Check the remaining hold's owner and reason before treating that as an error.
If an Order Editing hold is removed early, editing closes for that order. Do not release it manually unless the order is ready to stop accepting customer changes.
Confirm whether the connected warehouse or integration reads Shopify fulfilment holds.
Confirm it waits while the Order Editing hold is active.
Confirm it imports or resumes the order after that hold is removed.
Test an order containing a paid edit and, if applicable, an outstanding-balance edit.
Confirm the warehouse receives final quantities, items, address, and shipping method.
Some integrations manage additional tags or release actions. Follow that integration's Order Editing guide for those extra steps; do not assume every provider uses the same tag workflow.
Open the fulfilment order and inspect every hold. If another app or staff member created the remaining hold, its owner must release it. If the remaining hold belongs to Order Editing, check the editing deadline, outstanding balance, support-ticket, refund, or integration workflow before releasing it manually.
Confirm Enable automatic holds is still on and that the provider is configured to respect Shopify fulfilment holds. Create one controlled order after enabling the setting; changing it does not retroactively recreate a missing hold on an order already in progress.
Select Required by your integrations to see which connected integrations depend on holds. Disable or change the integration only after checking its setup requirements.
That is expected when the Order Editing hold is released early. The release signals that the order is no longer safe to edit.
