Use Shipping Address Edits to let customers correct the delivery address on an eligible order. The page also controls which destinations are allowed, how tax changes are handled, whether address suggestions appear, and which address edits need extra validation.
Confirm your fulfilment system accepts an address change after checkout.
Review whether a destination change should update shipping and tax amounts.
Identify any country, province, PO box, or field-length restrictions used by your warehouse or carrier.
Test address changes before an order is released to fulfilment.
In Order Editing, open App Settings.
Select Editing blocks.
Open Shipping Address Edits.
Turn on Allow customers to edit their shipping.
Review the shipping restrictions and tax behaviour.
Save the changes.
Order Editing checks saved addresses with Google Maps. Experian autocomplete and the fraud controls on this page are separate options; enabling address editing does not automatically enable either one.
In the customer order experience, View saved addresses opens the customer's Shopify address book. Selecting an address fills the shipping-address form so the customer can review or adjust it before saving.
The picker loads up to ten saved customer addresses and marks the Shopify default address.
If Limit shipping edits to the original shipping country is on, the picker shows only saved addresses that match the current country.
Choosing an address does not save it immediately. The normal address restrictions, validation, tax handling, and final Save address action still apply.
If no saved address matches, the customer can continue entering an address manually.
The saved-address picker uses Shopify customer-account data. It is different from Experian autocomplete, which suggests and formats addresses while the customer types.
Setting | What it changes |
|---|---|
Allow customers to use PO boxes for shipping | Keep on when carriers and fulfilment workflows accept PO boxes. Turn it off to block them during an edit. |
Limit shipping edits to the original shipping country | Prevents the customer from changing the country on the order while still allowing changes within the original country. |
Enable company field for shipping addresses | Keeps the company field visible in the customer address form. |
Restricted shipping addresses | Opens the list of blocked countries and provinces or states. |
Shopify Markets and shipping zones already hide destinations the store does not serve. Order Editing restrictions narrow that set further; they do not add a country that Shopify has excluded.
The province selector currently supports the configured state or province lists for the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. Test a blocked destination to confirm the customer cannot select it.
The Tax Recalculation section controls what happens when the new address changes the tax amount. Review its current modes and choose the result your store can support, such as collecting and refunding tax differences, collecting only increases, or denying an edit when tax rates change.
Tax handling can determine whether a customer must make another payment, receive a refund, or keep the original address. Test moves between two addresses with different tax rates rather than testing only a change within one postcode.
Turn on Enable Experian address autocomplete when customers should receive verified suggestions while typing on the Order Status page. This option uses the store's usage-based billing subscription and a monthly cap. Experian Search and Format calls count toward usage.
The Address autocomplete at checkout link opens the separate checkout setup. Order Status autocomplete and checkout autocomplete have different installation and plan requirements, so use the dedicated Address Autocomplete guide before enabling both.
Turn on Enable post-purchase fraud prevention to block an address edit when Order Editing connects the customer or payment activity with known fraudulent address behaviour.
Grant Shopify's read_shopify_payments_disputes permission if you also want Order Editing to use Shopify Payments chargeback information. The permission status on the page tells you whether those edits are being blocked.
This control reduces a specific address-change risk; it does not replace Shopify's fraud analysis or your fulfilment review process.
Select Show advanced settings to reveal the additional controls.
Setting | What it changes |
|---|---|
Enable custom validation for shipping addresses using Shopify Flow. | Sends the address through the supported Shopify Flow validation path for rules your store defines. |
Hide address line 2 field from forms | Hides the second address line and merges apartment or unit information into address line 1. |
Maximum characters for shipping address line 1 | Limits the first street-address line. |
Maximum characters for customer first name | Limits the customer first-name field. |
Maximum characters for customer last name | Limits the customer last-name field. |
Maximum characters for shipping address line 2 during checkout | Limits the second line in the supported checkout form. |
The numbers shown in empty character-limit fields are examples, not saved limits. Leave a field empty for no Order Editing limit. When adding a limit, use the maximum accepted by your ERP, warehouse, label printer, or carrier and test the resulting customer error.
Use the translation action at the top of the page to customize labels for editing, suggestions, validation outcomes, missing details, confirmation actions, and errors. Keep the instructions aligned with whether customers can keep their original address or must select a corrected one.
Open an existing controlled order that is unfulfilled and inside the editing window.
Change the address within the same country and save it.
Confirm the Shopify order and fulfilment view show the new address.
Test a PO box, blocked country, and blocked province that should be rejected.
Test a destination with a different tax rate and confirm the configured tax outcome.
If autocomplete is enabled, select a suggestion and confirm the formatted address is saved.
Select View saved addresses, choose a saved address, and confirm the form is filled without saving automatically.
If the original-country restriction is on, confirm saved addresses in other countries are not offered.
If Flow or fraud controls are enabled, test an allowed and a denied case.
Confirm field limits and translations in each important storefront language.
Confirm shipping-address editing is enabled and the order is still eligible.
Check the original-country, PO box, country, and province restrictions.
Review the tax-recalculation result and any payment or refund requirement.
Check Shopify Flow validation and fraud-prevention outcomes.
Confirm the value does not exceed a configured character limit.
If autocomplete is unavailable, confirm the usage subscription is active and its cap has not blocked new lookups.
If the saved-address list is empty, confirm the signed-in customer has a saved Shopify address that matches the allowed country.
