The Subscription Upsell module offers a product with selling plans. Use it when you want customers to add a subscription product after or during an order experience.
Use Subscription Upsell when recurring purchase is the main value of the offer.
Replenishable products, such as supplements, coffee, skincare, or pet products.
Subscribe-and-save offers.
Membership products with selling plans.
Targeted strategies for customers buying a related one-time product.
The product must have selling plans configured in Shopify through your subscription setup. Products without selling plans can't be saved in this module.
Warning: A subscription app or Shopify selling plans setup is required. This module works with subscription setups that create Shopify selling plans, including Recharge, Skio, Shopify Subscriptions, and Loop.
Subscription Upsell is not available on the Checkout Page, Free Shipping Upsell, Thank You Page, or Order Status Page placements.

Option | What it controls | Recommended approach |
Selling plans | Which subscription plans customers can choose. | Offer only plans that make sense for the upsell moment. |
Default selling plan | The plan selected first. | Choose the plan with the clearest customer value. |
Variants | Which product variants are available as subscriptions. | Remove variants without selling plans or poor fit. |
One-time purchase option | Whether customers can choose a non-subscription purchase. | Show it when flexibility matters. Hide it when subscription is required. |
Use strategy filters to make the subscription offer relevant. For example, show a coffee subscription only to customers buying coffee equipment or one-time coffee products.
Tip: Pre-select subscription when the value is clear, such as a subscribe-and-save offer. Show one-time purchase when customers may need flexibility.
Pre-select subscription when the recurring option is clearly better for the customer. This works for subscribe-and-save, replenishment, and membership offers.
Don't pre-select subscription when the commitment may surprise the customer. In those cases, show the one-time purchase option if Shopify allows it.
Choose products where repeat purchase is natural. Supplements, coffee, pet products, skincare, and household refills are usually stronger than one-off products.
Check that the variants you want to offer have selling plans. A variant without selling plans can't be used as a subscription option.
Choose a different product, or configure selling plans in Shopify before adding the module.
Those variants may not have selling plans. Select variants that have selling plans available.
Check the strategy placement. Subscription Upsell is disabled on Checkout Page, Free Shipping Upsell, Thank You Page, and Order Status Page placements.
