Delayed payment capture lets Shopify authorize a payment at checkout while Order Editing waits to capture it until the editing window closes. This can help warehouses and fulfilment apps receive one final order instead of progressive changes.
Use this workflow only when your payment and fulfilment setup supports manual capture. If another system must control the exact capture moment, review that workflow before enabling Order Editing capture.
Confirm your payment provider supports manual capture.
Check whether onboarding recommends delayed capture for your warehouse or integrations.
Plan one low-value controlled order with a payment method that creates an authorization.
Open App Settings > Global settings > Payment Capture.
Under Set up delayed payment capture, select Review onboarding if you have not confirmed the requirement.
Select Open Shopify settings.
In Shopify, switch payment capture from automatic to manual and save.
Return to Order Editing. The page checks Shopify until Manual capture is confirmed.
Select Enable delayed capture.
Confirm the status says Order Editing is capturing payments after the editing deadline.
If Shopify is still on automatic capture, the page shows Manual capture is required. Order Editing cannot delay a payment Shopify has already captured at checkout.
After setup, keep these protections on unless your process needs a documented exception:
Never capture orders likely to resolve in a chargeback;
Always refund customers for unused portions of their payments;
Capture payments before the authorization window closes.
For their exact behavior and advanced capture conditions, see Payment Capture Settings.
Create one low-value controlled order after manual capture and delayed capture are enabled. Confirm Shopify shows an authorized, not captured, payment.
Make a supported edit during the editing window.
Confirm the order total reflects the edit.
Let the editing window end.
Confirm the payment is captured for the final eligible amount.
Check the order timeline and your warehouse or integration.
If downgrades are enabled, repeat with a lower final total and confirm unused authorized funds are released.
Do not go live until both Shopify and the downstream system show the final order correctly. This check requires a new order because the authorization is created at checkout; an order whose payment was already captured cannot prove delayed capture.
On the Delayed payment capture card, select Disable delayed capture and confirm. This stops Order Editing from capturing authorized payments after the deadline. Shopify remains on manual capture, so you must change Shopify separately or provide another capture workflow.
Open Shopify payment settings again and confirm the change was saved. Return to Order Editing and wait for the status check, which polls while confirmation is pending.
Confirm delayed capture is enabled, the authorization is still capturable, and the order meets every advanced Capture Condition. Check whether high-risk protection excluded the order.
Leave the order uncaptured while you review its payment status and authorization. Retry through the approved Shopify workflow or contact the customer when a new payment is required. Do not fulfil an order solely because its editing window ended.
Keep Capture payments before the authorization window closes enabled. Authorization periods vary by provider and card; use Shopify's current payment documentation for the provider-specific window.
