Upsells help you recommend extra products to customers around checkout and after purchase. Start with one simple placement, confirm it works, then add more targeted strategies over time.
Before you set up your first upsell, make sure Order Editing is installed and you have at least one active product or collection you want to recommend.
An upsell is a product recommendation shown to a customer during checkout or after the order is placed. When the customer accepts the offer, the product is added to their order.
Order Editing can show upsells on the Checkout Page, Post-Purchase Page, Thank You Page, and Order Status Page. Shopify Plus is required for checkout placements. Thank You Page, Order Status Page, and One-Click Upsell placements are available on all Shopify plans.
💡 Tip: If you're new to upsells, start with the Product Carousel on the Thank You Page or Order Status Page. It's quick to enable and works on every Shopify plan.
You manage targeted offers with Upsell Strategies. A strategy decides where an offer appears, who sees it, which products show, and whether the offer includes a discount.

In the Order Editing app, go to Upsell Strategies.
Click Create Strategy.
Choose the page where the upsell should appear.
Add filters if you only want specific customers or orders to match.
Add one or more product modules.
Add an optional discount.
Save the strategy.
New strategies are Active by default. If you're still preparing the offer, change the status to Draft before saving.
Your strategy can only appear after the matching app block or extension is installed in Shopify.

Place a test order and check the page where your upsell should appear. Confirm the app block is visible, the expected products show, and any discount displays correctly.
If the upsell doesn't appear, check that the strategy is Active, the app block is installed, your filters match the test order, and the recommended products are active in your Shopify admin.
After your first upsell is live, use analytics to check views, uptake, upsell revenue, and AOV Lift. Start with one placement, learn what converts, then expand to other pages or more specific customer segments.
