Order Editing's upsell strategies let you show product recommendations at key moments, from checkout through to the Order Status Page. Customers can add products to their existing order, which can increase average order value without extra acquisition cost.
Upsells can appear on the Checkout Page, Post-Purchase Page, Thank You Page, and Order Status Page. You control what products appear and who sees them by creating Upsell Strategies.
Upsells work on all Shopify plans. Checkout Page placements require Shopify Plus, but the Post-Purchase Page, Thank You Page, and Order Status Page are available to every merchant.
Every upsell has three parts: a page, an Upsell Strategy, and modules.
A customer proceeds through checkout or completes their purchase.
At each page, Order Editing checks for matching Upsell Strategies.
Each page chooses its own winning strategy based on the customer's order and filters.
The winning strategy's modules decide which products to show.
The customer sees the offer and can accept it.
If no strategy matches, the Fallback Strategy can show instead. Without a Fallback Strategy, most placements show no upsell.
A page is a step in the customer journey where upsells can appear. A placement is the specific upsell block shown on that page.
Page | What it is | Plan |
Checkout Page | Product recommendations before payment. | Shopify Plus |
Post-Purchase Page | A full-page offer after checkout and before the Thank You Page. | All plans |
Thank You Page | Product recommendations after payment. | All plans |
Order Status Page | Product recommendations on the order tracking page. | All plans |
🔒 Shopify Plus: Checkout Page upsells require Shopify Plus. Use One-Click Upsell, Thank You Page, and Order Status Page placements if you are not on Plus.
An Upsell Strategy is a complete configuration that controls the placement, products, audience, and discount for an offer.
Each strategy includes a placement, filters, modules, an optional discount, and matching logic. When more than one strategy matches, Order Editing chooses the most specific one.
New Upsell Strategies are Active by default. Set a strategy to Draft if you want to prepare it without showing it to customers.
Modules are product recommendation sources inside an Upsell Strategy. They decide which products your customers see.
Common modules include Single Product, Upsell Products from Cart, Group of Products, Recently Viewed, Complementary Products, Related Products, Collection, Keyword Search, Gift Card, Metafields, Nosto Recommendations, and Searchspring Recommendations.
ℹ️ Note: Not every module is available on every page. For example, Recently Viewed is not available on the One-Click Upsell.
The Fallback Strategy is a safety net. It shows when no other Upsell Strategy matches the customer on a page. Configure it with broadly appealing products that can work for any customer.
Show complementary products after checkout, such as belts or socks for customers who bought jeans.
Use the Free Shipping Upsell to show a progress bar and products that help customers reach your free shipping threshold.
Use customer filters to show special offers to returning customers while first-time buyers see your Fallback Strategy.
Go to Upsell Strategies in the Order Editing app, click Create Strategy, choose a page, pick a template or start from scratch, then install the placement block and save.
💡 Tip: Create a Fallback Strategy so customers who do not match a targeted strategy can still see an offer.
Track performance from the Upsell Strategies page. Key metrics include Upsell Revenue, AOV Lift, Uptake, and Views.
